Elementary School teacher in Modesto City Schools for 27 years. Currently living in Costa Rica but travels frequently to the USA.
After my first year of teaching, I created an afterschool chess program for my students. The student population was 90% free and reduced lunch with about 80% coming from Latino families. Over a 20-year period, students attended 200+ tournaments and 14 national chess championships. Many students used chess as a stepping stone out of socio-economically disadvantaged environments to become first-generation college graduates.
